Ugly Studios Ltd | City of London – Interpretation Plan

Brief

The City of London Corporation (CLC), owners of Highgate Wood, commissioned Ugly Studios to develop an interpretation plan for their visitor centre. A new Roman display would explore the rich and unique history of the area, and including the original pottery kiln discovered on-site in the 1960's.

Idea

Audience and stakeholder research revealed a thriving local interest in Roman history and modern archaeological practice, centered on Highgate Wood. We envisaged a plan that would express the significance of the site in both ancient and modern times, and reveal human connections across the ages. Our design emulates the surrounding environment, inviting visitors to step into the landscape of the past.

Result

Our interpretation plan received positive feedback from both the CLC and their target audiences, gathering enthusiasm and momentum. The CLC continue to use our interpretation plan as part of their ongoing funding applications. The original archaeologist of the site, Harvey Sheldon, expressed his support of the plan, stating "Excellent: it seems like a very attractive scheme to me."
