Ugly Studios were commissioned to produce a series of touch-screen interactives for FCC Environment’s visitor centre in Lincoln. One interactive about sorting your household waste for recycling, another about making green choices and one about the workings of an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant.
Idea
For the recycling touch-screen visitors have to sort a pile of virtual rubbish into different bins against the clock. The green choices interactive takes the form of a quiz, where visitors are asked a series of lifestyle questions. The Energy from Waste (EfW) interactive presents a 3D model of the EfW plant. Clicking on different parts of the plant plays 3D animated videos about the different parts of the process.
Please note: visitors were filmed during Covid restrictions. The screens are usually operated using a finger, not a stylus.
Result
Through these hands-on interactives many of the client's key learning objectives are imparted. Visitors of all ages can interact with the touch-screens without instruction, essential as a group of visitors to this site are usually only accompanied by one member of staff. The screens reset themselves between visitors and so can be left completely unattended.

Ugly Studios installed the touch screens and software in 2016, the feedback from staff and visitors alike has been very positive: they are user friendly, easy to turn on and off and have never needed any maintenance. A fantastic addition to our visitor experience.
