Brief

The Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Visitor Centre at Cley Marshes was a cutting-edge facility even before the 2015 revamp of the site was commissioned. Ugly Studios won the opportunity to augment the centre's modern and innovative design with a range of high-quality interactive touch-screens, a touch-table, and complete audio-visual supply and fit-out.

Idea

Our approach was firstly to follow the clean lines of the building with our furniture design. Within this we installed capacitive touch-screens and solid-state computers; hardware that is both stylish and durable. The next layer was bespoke software allowing visitors to engage at at the level that they are happy with; quickly browsing or delving for detail. A touch-table about bird migration enables multiple visitors to explore content, share it and play with it together. A video wall, full soundsystem and interactive whiteboard were sourced to build an immersive, welcoming atmosphere in the new Education Centre at Cley Marshes.

Result

The new Simon Aspinall Education Centre was opened to the public by Sir David Attenborough in Summer 2015, complete with touch-table, migratory 'arrivals and departure' screen and audio-visual suite. Three touch-screens, each with different content, take pride of place in the existing Visitor Centre.
