As part of their design of a new gallery at Norwich Castle, Norfolk Museums Service commissioned Ugly Studios to develop high quality imagery and storytelling. We were asked to deliver a series of illustrations around the exhibition, and an animated film on the legend of the Anglo-Saxon king St Edmund.
Idea
Our aim was for all of our designs to work seamlessly with the existing display, maintaining a cohesive visitor experience. We worked closely with the NMS team to create designs that used authentic Anglo-Saxon imagery, yet felt contemporary and relatable.
Result
Our 2D film evoked characteristic Anglo-Saxon motifs, animated in a cut-out style to give it a quirky twist. We also produced full-scale illustrations to add context and an authentic flavour to the displays. The Anglo-Saxon and Viking Gallery is currently open to the public, and remains popular with the wide range of people that visit the Castle.
