Ugly Studios Ltd | Orford Ness – Interpretation Plan

Brief

The National Trust's Orford Ness is a former military top-secret test base, now National Nature Reserve, on a remote shingle spit in Suffolk. Ugly Studios were commissioned to create a plan to interpret the whole site across seven separate buildings.

Idea

We balanced the site's military history with wildlife and landscape stories to create consistent themes and messages. From these messages we produced costed display ideas for the different buildings. Each building forms part of a planned, non-linear visitor journey.

Result

The site is being gradually updated with new interpretation based on our plan. In 2014 we fitted out the Quayside Office, and in 2015 we will be designing interpretive displays for the building where radar experiments took place between 1935 and 1937!
