The ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For centuries the Abbey housed the monks who lead the early English Church. English Heritage asked Ugly Studios to produce new interpretation for a family audience, as well as furniture for a new ‘Virtual Abbey’ exhibit.
Idea
The client had already commissioned monks habits for visitors to wear. We worked with them to develop the
family visit with the story of becoming a monk. Activities included a ‘Monk Name Generator’, an outdoor trail and a game of ‘Snakes and Abbots’.
Result
The new interpretation strikes a balance, being distinct from the existing displays whilst also blending in as part of an overall design. It adds new interpretation media to the exhibition and furniture to house virtual reality hardware.

Working with Ugly Studios has always been a great experience… coming up with innovative ideas to bring objects like the sundial to life, and playful games which help visitors to explore the daily lives of monks.
