The Church of Our Lady St Mary in South Creake, Norfolk, received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the installation of an Ellacombe chiming apparatus, a clever mechanism which allows all 5 of their church bells to be rung by one person. As part of their grant, they needed to provide display material for visitors to the Church.
Idea
Working to the available budget, we proposed the design of interpretation panels, sympathetic to the atmosphere of the Church, accompanied by a leaflet. Detailed and high-quality illustrations would take centre stage, with the content exploring the history of English bell-ringing. The overall project would aim to be simple yet engaging, to allow all visitors access to the Church's heritage.
Result
Our interpretation panel has allowed more visitors to 'see' the bells when, as in many churches, the bells are hidden away at the top of the church tower. The display is easy to find, lit up by LED lights around the edge of the panel. Visitors can immediately see the display, engage with it, and take a leaflet.
