Brief

After providing the interpretation plan and display plan for their Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Stage 2 bid.Ugly Studios won a competitive tender to design and deliver Wells Maltings' new Heritage Centre. The Maltings is a new cultural and community hub on the north Norfolk coast.

Idea

Our design moved away from the 'traditional' museum layout in favour of a creative, engaging community hub.Inspired by the town’s colourful past, we set about creating a set of characters to represent the life of the town, through the ages. We wanted to show how Wells has been shaped by its people, its industry and by the sea.

Result

Visitors have been intrigued by the stories and the personal side of the town, often searching to see if they have personal connection with the figures depicted. The galleries also appeal to young people with plenty of child-friendly, interactive and accessible exhibits to interest them; which has proved to be very popular.

The Centre has caught the imagination of the public and is a fitting celebration of this remarkable town. It is an important part of our cultural offer here at Wells Maltings and a real credit to the creativity, expertise and professionalism of Ugly Studios.
